  5.     When you look around software stores today, it's hard to miss
  6. the suite deals being offered by the big three companies.
  7. Microsoft, Lotus and Novell each offer a suite that has at least
  8. three components: word processor, spreadsheet and database.  Novell
  9. stops there, but Microsoft and Lotus add their own twists to the
  10. fold.
  11.     Microsoft adds an email client.  Whippee!  Lotus takes the suite
  12. to a higher floor by adding not only a personal information manager
  13. (PIM), but a handy screen recording utility.  So where Novell leads
  14. you into the dining room and Microsoft sits you down at the table,
  15. Lotus delivers a super charged, gourmet feast of applications.
  16.     Lotus includes the following packages in one box:

  18.      Lotus 123 Release 5.0 - The industry leading spreadsheet.
  19.      Lotus Approach 3.0 - A very easy to use database program.
  20.          Lotus AmiPro 3.1 - An underrated word processor. 
  21. Lotus Freelance Graphics 2.1 - The granddaddy of the presentation field.
  22.              Lotus Organizer 1.1 - A Daytimer like PIM.
  23. Lotus ScreenCam 1.1 - One of the top five niftiest utilities available for Windows.

  25.     As you can tell, there is about as much software power in this
  26. one box than you could find anywhere.  About the only thing missing
  27. is Lotus Doom Version 3.0!
  28.     To review each application is out of the scope of this review,
  29. but we'll say a little about each application before moving onto the
  30. suite specific part.
  31.     Lotus 123 for Windows 5.0 is Lotus' latest version of the
  32. venerable great.  It is a rock solid performer that now includes
  33. pre-designed templates that help you conquer typical business
  34. problems and Lotus Maps which allows you to create color coded maps
  35. with spreadsheet data to see how different geographic regions
  36. compare.
  37.     The neatest feature of Lotus 123 for Windows is version manager.
  38. Do you typically send your spreadsheet to someone to mark up and
  39. send back to you?  With version manager you can track the worksheet
  40. changes.  You can even work on the same file at the same time with
  41. someone in your group.  Amazing.
  42.     Lotus Approach is a product Lotus purchased to round out it's
  43. suite offering.  Version 2.0 was little more than a Lotusized copy
  44. of the original, while 3.0 is a totally new product.  Usability is
  45. the key feature with any Windows database program.  How fast can you
  46. get your data ideas from your head to the screen and do they work?
  47. With Approach, getting what you want out of your data is effortless.
  48. I was able to get a fully integrated database for product requests
  49. up and running in about an hour.  Simple.
  50.     Lotus AmiPro 3.1.  OK, every suite has to have the old Achilles
  51. heel.  Lotus AmiPro is SmartSuite's heel.  Don't get me wrong, Lotus
  52. AmiPro has a very rich set of features, in fact, it is the word
  53. processor I use on a daily basis.  Since there hasn't been a major
  54. upgrade to AmiPro in over 1 and a half years, the program shows its
  55. age in the places where Microsoft Word or WordPerfect shine -- user
  56. convenience.  Lotus AmiPro lacks any sort of Wizard or Coach
  57. function, so new users are left with an inadequate, bas ic guided
  58. tour.  In addition, the right mouse button functions only on the
  59. very basic level.  A Word or WordPerfect user moving from their
  60. platform to Lotus AmiPro would feel like an appendage had been
  61. removed.
  62.     This isn't meant to totally bash AmiPro.  It is a very decent
  63. word processing package that is showing signs of age.  There are
  64. definite pluses in using Lotus AmiPro such as style sheets and a
  65. very powerful macro language.  Basic.
  66.     Lotus Freelance Graphics 2.1 is about as slick as slick can get.
  67. We are talking greased water balloon slick.  It is so good you may
  68. find yourself creating presentations just to use the package.  Lotus
  69. has really done their homework and made Freelance the perfect
  70. presentation tool.  Not only can you create a simple presentation in
  71. a few minutes, but complex presentations are made easier via the
  72. Smart Master process.  A blast.
  73.     Lotus Organizer 1.1 is another product Lotus bought to make the
  74. suite complete so to speak.  Lotus Organizer uses a day book
  75. metaphor to present your time and projects to you.  It is very easy
  76. to use and very basic in operation.  Who would use this?  I would
  77. and do.  If you are a salesman, though, this isn't a package you
  78. would want to base your contact list on.  On the other hand, if you
  79. are an executive, this is the perfect application for you.
  80. Refreshing.
  81.     Lotus Screen Cam 1.1 has to be the neatest utility I have seen
  82. for Windows since PlugIn.  The purpose of ScreenCam is to make a
  83. "movie" out of your movements in Windows.  Not only does it playback
  84. what you typed, clicked or moved, but it will also let you voice
  85. annotate.  Super!  When you play the movies you create back, you
  86. have full control over rewind, fast forward, pause, etc.  Cool.
  87.     OK, one of the main reasons you buy a suite is so working among
  88.  applications is as easy as it gets.  I am happy to report Lotus has
  89.  finally gotten it right!  If you suffered through the installation
  90.  process for SmartSuite 2.0, you'll be happy, very happy, to learn
  91.  that the 3.0 installation is sequential.  You receive 27 disks that
  92.  you can install as little or as much of the suite as you need from.
  93.  In 2.0 you had to install each component by itself.  Since you
  94.  install all the applications at one time, Lotus can save you disk
  95.  space by sharing .DLLs and .EXEs among the different applications.
  96.     Moving into actual usage, SmartSuite is the first suite to offer
  97. a common interface in all the applications.  Using Lotus' SmartIcons
  98. in each application, you can make them look as alike or as different
  99. as you need to.  As well, you can simply drag and drop information
  100. from one application to another without having to tweak anything.
  101.     As an added bonus, all the applications are designed to work
  102. flawlessly with Notes and CC:MAIL.
  103.     Should you look into purchasing SmartSuite?  You should if you
  104. want to save money and own the best suite available on the market
  105. today!
